Beginning in the gloomy year of 1816, a year of failing crops and rebellion, the tales move through the opulent rooms of the British aristocracy and the English countryside in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars and the horrendous Battle of Waterloo.

It was the greatest of times, it was the best of worlds filled with possibility. It was the age of fallen idols, and the age of governments using military force to subdue starving crowds. It was an era when making hay in one's own garden was seen as superior to planting parks for the common good. Business interests made the public private, and loyalties of old were betrayed, marked by madness and war. It was an era of change and upheaval, some for good, some for worse: in other words it was an age very much like our own.
